I recently came across a post on 9Magazine.com that got me thinking about the exotic car experience. The post, titled Everyone Should Drive a Porsche at Least Once, is a short, interesting read about the virtues of experiencing a car like a Porsche first hand, and hints at some of the thinking behind crazy Porsche fans. It also dispels some of the myths about exotic car ownership, and these cars being generally out of reach for most people.
I’m a wholehearted believer in experiencing not only Porsches, but exotic cars in general. Too many people automatically assume that exotic car ownership is completely out of the question. Up until a few years ago, I was pretty much in that same camp. I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to realize the dream of owning a Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and others cars on my dream garage list.
It wasn’t until I visited a local used exotic car dealership, and started looking through their web site at cars that I realized ownership is really attainable for the average person. In fact, not a month later, I ended up buying a Ferrari 348 ts for the price of an average mini van (granted it was much less practical, but WAY more fun!), realizing a dream of owning a Ferrari some day.
Although the Ferrari has been gone for a couple of years now, the experience literally changed my viewpoint on exotic car ownership. It was a great experience. I enjoyed the heck out of that car, gave more rides than I can count and made sure all of my car buddies (and even most of my family members) got behind the wheel at least once. I believed, and still believe, everyone needs to be able to say they’ve driven a Ferrari. There were many a time I watched the clip from the movie Scent of a Woman where Al Pacino drives the Ferrari. Classic scene!
Many of the cars you love are not that far out of reach. They are a blast to own, and although there are plenty of horror stories, as long as you’re careful when you buy, you will LOVE the experience.
