I always seem to find something tempting at least once a week. Funny where you stumble on something that really starts getting your heart pumping thinking about the possibilities of throwing caution to the wind and giving in to temptation. Here are a couple of Tempting Porsches from today.
Tempting Porsche #1
Today I was searching for some info on a car for my Ultimate Car List Top 5, just minding my own business, when BAM! out of nowhere, a Porsche blindsides my virtual world. It was a red 1978 911 Turbo (930) and left me feeling like I did the day I drove the 911 Turbo look car I put up on the blog a month or so ago. Here’s a little bit from the auction description:
I have always had a passion for cars or anything with a motor. Over the years I have developed a list of cars that I just had to have. I set out to find a 930 as part of that search. I wanted an early year that represented the true raw spirit of the 930 Turbo. After quite some time of searching I found the perfect car. A red 1978 Porsche 930 with black interior.
What made this car so special was the fact that it had been totally disassembled and repainted. The factory Fuch wheels were chromed and have good rubber on them. With a car that looks this good there must be a catch…how would it be mechanically? Well this is the best part of all, the motor was just rebuilt.
As the car sits today the motor has only 20,500 miles. The car odometer reads 115,500, that means the car has only been driven less than 4,000 miles per year since new. If you look at the pictures you will see a stack of receipts that total nearly $60,000.00, that’s not including the price of the car. Also I have a photo journal of the building of the motor.
In the last couple of months the front seats, headliner and dash have been recovered. It also has a new windshield. The only reason I’m selling this is I have an opportunity to buy another couple of cars on my list.
One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was in a full on email conversation with the owner who lives in California. I have no idea what I was thinking. The last thing I need at the moment is another car, but I just couldn’t help myself and my imagination was screaming for more.
Bruce Anderson claims that when there’s a lot of money, 911 Turbos go for unbelievable prices, but when cash is tight, you can’t hardly give the cars away. Given that logic, this car is a bit on the pricey side at $31,900. Although the owner did send me a second chance offer on the eBay auction (yes, I admit it…I actually bid on the auction) at $31,000. That leads me to believe you could probably offer him in the high $20’s and maybe end up with a decent deal. Dang tempting.
Tempting Porsche #2
The second Tempting Porsche for today is one that was up on Craigslist. Paul called it “the every man’s kick around car”. It’s a white 1966 912 with a VW 1776 engine in it. Evidently it’s not that uncommon for people to drop in other engines into these older 911s and 912s. Kind of a mini-outlaw kind of thing I suppose.
The Craigslist ad was super informative:
Nice shape. VW 1776 engine. 5 speed.
Yep, that was it. It’s listed for $3900, so I suppose there’s really not a huge amount at stake here. Be a fun car to buy and have. If I could just find an old Ford Dealership, I could start my OWN collection.
Any idea what the original msrp would be on the red 911? Talk about holding value, if it sells for 30k…
$3900,why not?
first words out of my mouth when the page loaded.
“oh my lord”
very tempting 930;red looks great.
The Rolex Sports Car Series is on right now. Go Porsche! I love watching the races w/ multiple classes. Makes for some great racing and some exciting congestion situations.
lol at the old Ford Dealership comment. You can probably find an abandoned GM or Chrysler dealership to start your Porsche museum Ryan. That being said — #1 is sweet, but I agree, a bit pricey. #2 would be sweet fun. That would be a really fun car to tool around with for under $4k. When my kids turn 16 I may buy them one of these types of rides. For them, of course.
the red always does it for me.
Now that is my kind of ultimate car. A red 930 Turbo, one of my long time favorites. Way to go for including this on the Ultimate Car List. You just made my day.
I don’t post too much, but this was a good read. Craigslist always has something new in stock. I read a post on some site about a guy who wanted to buy a car for his gf, and he found something about a hidden paragraph with Hitler info… Very odd. That is Craigslist…
sorry Ryan, but friends don’t let friends drive Porsches w/ Beetle motors…if you keep it up, an intervention maybe necessary
Sweeeeeet! Late 70`s ,early 80`s are the best era for the 911 in my opinion! Hey if you did actually bid on it..Take that second chance! 🙂
I think that red is an ugly color for a Porsche. Give me any other color and I’m down.
I’ll take #2 in a flash… It’s not red.
hitler info?what the….
Are you serious Jeremy? Red is one of the best colors for a Porsche, it’s classic. Red Porsche even sounds right.
Are you serious right now Jeremy? No red Porsches for you?
That’s almost sacrilege.
jeremy what are you smokin?? you don’t like the red?
A red one looks fast even standing still, and they are as fast as you need them to be, so that is cool.
red is like the best color….for me anyway……this is gotta be my 2nd favorite version of the 911
the worst color I’ve ever seen on a Porsche is cassis red metallic, they did it on 928 & 968 models. They should have called it puke pink:

evidently they did that color on carerras too:

no thanks.
Red is a girls color. Just ask Conan O’Brien: http://www.hulu.com/watch/75578/the-tonight-show-with-conan-obrien-conan-takes-the-tram#x-4,vclip,2
What does Conan know? Hey, his hair is red. hmmm.
The red 930 is quite nice but I’ve always preferred the
black fuchs over the chromed “spokes”.
@Phil – agreed – the Fuchs are best on cars from that period
