2009 Porsche 911 Carrera = Classic Porsche

I was reading a post about the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera this week that solidified in my mind why Porsche will continue to be a strong brand and weather the economic conditions much better than other car manufacturers. The title of the post was Porsche 911 Carrera: There still is no substitute. I can’t think of a better way to put it.

The 911 has not really changed all that much aesthetically in over 40 years of production. Sure significant changes have been made both inside and out. I would venture to guess that most of those changes would be significant primarily to the pure Porscheophiles. The average person or Porsche admirer recognizes a Porsche as a Porsche with the 911 being the easily recognizable icon of a long history of carmaking. To them/us, the changes would be less significant bringing me to my point: Porsche has been successful largely because it hasn’t significantly messed with the styling of its 911 model.

By remaining conservative in styling over the years, Porsche protects its lineage as well as owner loyalty. There’s little imperative to buy a brand-new 911 every few years. It also serves to keep the used-car values high. (Read More)

Other Porsche models come and go (356, 924, 944, 928, 968, Boxster & Cayenne at some point to name a few), but the 911 remains strong and continues to sell well.  Used 911 prices are holding up strong with classics and rare cars even going up in value.

Not an earth shattering observation, I know, but a great reminder of a big reason Porsche will remain strong through a tough worldwide economy.  With the media sources pedaling their economic blues wares, don’t drink the Porsche is like all the rest koolaid.

  2. I agree that Porsche should always keep the 911 basically the way it is. It will be a car that always was ahead of it’s time, no matter what year it is.
