Weekly Porsche Wrap

Porsche on 25 most iconic cars of the past 20 years – Thanks to Joe for sending this over. BusinessWeek put together an interesting iconic cars list. Not sure if they’re listed in order per se. If so, Porsche is listed as #22. Like Joe, I don’t agree with Porsche being so far down the list. I DO agree, though, with BW describing it as “a gold-standard nameplate”! Some unbelievable cars on the list and quite a few on my list to own some day. [Via BusinessWeek.com]

Don’t park your Porsche next to Tony Danza – The big T-Dawg drives a Mini, but that didn’t stop him from whacking a Porsche Boxster while getting into his car. He got out to check the damage, but didn’t leave a note for the other car’s owner. Ahh, nothing like reporters to bring us the “real” news. If you don’t know who Tony Danza is, don’t worry, the old guys of the blog will. [Via autoevolution.com]

Man might move into his Porsche – Sorry, that was a little tabloidish, but this one is pretty good. It’s a guy in Bellevue, Wash. who lost his job back in November. His unemployment benefits are running out in the next month and he can’t find work. The one good thing? Here’s what he has to say… “I have an insurance policy on the Porsche that will make my payments in the event of my unemployment or disability…so that if I have to resort to my Porsche to live in, it will be rent free. As long as I don’t move it.” Now THAT’S seeing the glass as half full. [Via TheHuffingtonPost.com]

Porsche museum will feature Volkswagen Beetle prototypes – There’s no denying Porsche’s pre-birth history. The exhibit, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the first “people’s car” will trace Ferdinand Porsche’s history in creating seven different small cars for a variety of manufacturers in the 1930s. Would be a cool exhibit to see in person, especially alongside the early 356s. Maybe this exhibit will do it, but I’d love to see them put together something that traced Porsche’s designs from start through 356. [Via Edmunds Inside Line]

“Why Macs Look Like Porsches” – Sorry. I love Macs almost as much as I love Porsches. I think I mentioned this in a post before, but it’s worth mentioning again since it crossed my browser this morning. The post recounts one individual’s experience while at Apple headquarters in 1981. The discussion at Apple was around the design of one of the original Macintosh casings. Here is the exchange quoted:

“We need it to have a classic look, that won’t go out of style, like the Volkswagen Beetle”, I heard Steve tell James.

“No, that’s not right.”, James replied. “The lines should be voluptuous, like a Ferrari.”

“Not a Ferrari, that’s not right either”, Steve responded, apparently excited by the car comparison. “It should be more like a Porsche!” Not so coincidentally, in those days Steve was driving a Porsche 928.

If you’re a “Mac” person, read the rest of the post. It’ll warm your heart. Whether it’s true or not. [Via Neowin.net]

Now Daimler may get into the Porsche action??? – I’m seeing reports all over the place in the last couple of days about Daimler AG being in discussions to buy a stake in Porsche SE. Not sure if it’s true, but that one doesn’t excite me one bit. If you had the option, would you choose Qatar or Daimler? [Via Bloomberg.com]

Porsche wins “Best Engine 2009” award – Yep, another award for Porsche. This time for the new flat-six engine that featured Porsche’s Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) system. This power plant dramatically increased power and engine flexibility while at the same time increasing efficiency and making it more environmentally friendly. This is the engine that went into the 2009 911 Carrera S. [Via PaddockTalk.com]

Comments

  1. best engine 2009 is quite an honor.constantly improving.

  2. that list of iconic cars could not have been in any particular oder, they listed the miata first.

  3. mitchell says

loved the mac comment! im a mac user myself and the concept is so true – it applies to lots of things.

  4. iconic is right.can always tell a porsche even if you don’t know cars.

  5. I feel very sorry for the guy that is out of work and may have to live in his Porsche for a while. That sure makes a good story though. Even though he has is pretty bad, I can relate in my own little way. Hopefully, he will pull thru.

  6. jeremy,
    where have you been??

  7. Most certainly the 911 should make the list of Icons! But within the true meaning of Icon , The whole Porsche Marque should be considered so!

  8. I know of a person with a case similar to that of living in a porsche. His issues however are much greater than unemployment. He has a new 750 though.

  9. Didn’t daimler work on that great thing called daimlerchrysler?

  10. always wondered why m.b. did chrysler deal.never seemed like a good idea.

  11. I guess Tony was pretty confident he didn’t damage the Boxter, because with the cameras and reporters there he should have just left a note to get the reporters off his back.

  12. has Tony Danza ever played a character who’s name WASN’T Tony?

  13. @bookie, No.. they didnt want to confuse him lol. Just kidding i actually like tony Danza…That and and i dont want my face punched in lol

  14. I think you’re actually right – they don’t want to confuse him, seems like an easy thing to do

  15. who hasn’t dinged a car and not left a note?i guess we just hold tony to a higher standard.

  16. I don’t believe anything is going to happen with Diamler getting involved with Porsche. I don’t think they are looking to invest like Qatar is, and I would just guess they have more cash to invest being an oil nation.
